Hercules is one of Alan Menken’s most underrated scores. With movies like The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast and Tangled under his belt, many forget he also composed soundtracks for features like Hunchback of Notre Dame and Hercules.
As Menken gears up for D23, he hinted at some projects he’s working on… including a stage adaptation of the 1997 film Hercules.
While talking to the OC Register, Menken said:
“I love Quasimodo [from The Hunchback of Notre Dame]. I thought it was a powerful stage show with a very complex protagonist. I’ve loved all of our protagonist: Aladdin, Belle and Jasmine, and Hercules. I have a very strong belief like Newsies, Hercules is going to have a moment that will surprise people. Actually, I’m working on a stage version of Hercules.
Menken didn’t specify his future plans for the project, which could means it will hit Broadway, the Disney Cruise Line or even Disney Parks– either way it’s exciting news.
