“The Lion King” Makes $13.4M Debut in China on Friday

The Lion King is lining up to be a major success overseas.

Box office projections in China have it potentially being the most successful Disney love-action film in the country.

On Friday, The Lion King debuted (one week ahead of the U.S. premiere) at $13.4M, which translated to RMB92.6 million in local currency.

To put that in perspective, Toy Story 4 only earned $13.2 million for its 3-day debut weekend.

The Jon Favreau-directed reimagining of the Disney classic is also expected to break records in the United States.

It premieres in America July 19.
