“Frozen 2” Surpasses Original Film at Domestic Box Office

Frozen fans just can’t seem to let it go.

Frozen 2 has officially passed the original film at the box office. Upon its release in 2013, Frozen was a record-breaking hit that notched a then-record opening for Thanksgiving weekend ($93.9M). It quickly became a cultural phenomenon, and a sequel was soon ordered. This year, Frozen 2 debuted to $130.2 million the weekend before Thanksgiving and scored the biggest global debut for any animated film.

Frozen 2 is the fifth highest-grossing movie of the year in the United States, with a current total of $410.7 million– and puts it above Frozen‘s final domestic total, which was $400.7 million back in 2013. That was over the course of its entire box office run, while Frozen 2 has only been in theaters for five weeks.

According to Box Office MojoFrozen 2 has officially reached $1.16 billion worldwide, making it the third-highest grossing movie of 2019.
