Task Force: Theme Parks Could Potentially Reopen at Own Discretion

The Orange County Economic Recovery Task Force suggests Florida theme parks could open at their own discretion.

While no decision was made for future reopenings, the 50 member task force tossed around the idea that places like Disney World and Universal could control their own fate during a call on Wednesday.

Chuck Whittall, President of Unicorp, read a statement that was put together after discussions with Thomas Mazloum, Senior Vice President of Walt Disney World Resorts and Transportation Operations. Here’s the working draft that Whittall ran by Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings:

Theme parks and other venues of that magnitude shall each develop their own specific and unique set of guidelines following the CDC recommendations and using best practices that will protect the life, health, and safety of their employees and guests. They will be permitted to open at their own discretion with their internally determined level of safe capacities throughout the various [reopening] phases.

Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings said no business will be able to open until he gives the county the green light. After that, it COULD be fair game for large theme parks.

Orange County has released a number of videos on their YouTube page from today’s discussions:

No final decisions have been made. On Tuesday, members of the task force discussed guidelines and mandates for theme parks and hotels.

Disney has been closed since mid-March.
