Disney smashes its own global box office record this weekend– raking in $7.67B so far in 2019. The previous record for any studio was set by Disney in 2016 with $7.61B.
The company currently holds five out of the top 6 biggest films of the year globally:
- Avengers: Endgame ($2.79 billion)
- Captain Marvel ($1.1 billion)
- Aladdin ($1 billion)
- The Lion King ($962 million)
- Toy Story 4 ($917 million)
Since officially acquiring Fox’s film assets earlier this year, Disney owns over 40% of the domestic marketshare, more than double its closest competitors, Warner Bros. and Universal, each holding roughly 13%, according to Variety.
With numbers already through the roof in 2019, Disney’s records will continue to grow at an exponential rate. Frozen 2, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will all be released at the end of the year.
